How to become a Registered Nurse in New Zealand

Conversion Of Diploma into BSN Leading to CAP And Registration

Students with Diploma/Degree in Nursing and registered as a nurse in their home country may choose any one of the study programmes.

Bachelor of Nursing for Registered Nurses  (1 year)

A Programme that gives Internationally Qualified Nurses an opportunity to convert their Diploma into a NewZealand Bachelor Degree (Hons) in Nursing.
(IELTS score is 6.5 and no bands less than 6.0)
Once this Degree is achieved with 7.0 in ILETS, these graduates can easily register with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as Registered Nurses.

Direct entry in to 2nd year Bachelor Degree in Nursing 

The qualifications mentioned above are required to apply for this programme. Successful completion of this programme will qualify the graduates eligible for registration as R.N. with the Nursing Council of New Zealand without any additional requirements.

Competence Assessment Programme (CAP) (6 - 12 Weeks)

Overseas Registered Nurses will be directed to successfully complete a competency based programme inorder to attain Nursing Council of New Zealand registration. CAP is such a programme which is designed to meet the needs of Overseas Registered Nurses. The Registered Nurse will be updated across the scope of nursing practice and have the opportunity to revise his/her nursing knowledge in order to achieve prescribed Nursing Council of New Zealand Competencies.

Applicants from a country where English is not the first or native language must provide certification from an accepted language testing authority indicating that they have achieved the required standard of performance in the English language within the last two years.

Upon successful registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, the applicant would now be a fully qualified, registered nurse and can seek employment in New Zealand. With a job offer, the applicant can gain a work visa. After obtaining a work visa and full-time employment, the applicant may apply for permanent residence in New Zealand.
